Shauger Hill Hiking Trail
This 2.4 mile (3.9 km) trail takes you through hardwood forest interspersed with a few small fields and pine plantations. The first half of the loop has some moderate uphill slopes, while the latter part has some steep downhill sections. The glacial soil of Shauger Hill supports a climax beech/maple forest, a rich woodland that changes with the seasons.
In the spring, look for wild flowers and morels; in the summer enjoy the deep shade and listen for songs of the ovenbird, red-eyed vireo and veery; in the fall, relish the colorful foliage; and in the winter, try cross-country skiing through these snowy woods, part of the Scenic Drive Cross-Country Trail system.
