The Perseid meteor shower is a summer staple & fast approaching the peak!! EarthSky says that the early mornings of August 11-13, 2024 is your best bet for meteor action, but you can usually see them between midnight – 6am. They are also visible for most of the month of August. That’s perfect because there’s an excellent chance of Northern Lights for the Friday & Saturday nights which are usually strongest between midnight – 3am!!

EarthSky adds that the August Perseid meteor shower is rich and steady, from early August through the peak. The meteors are colorful. And they frequently leave persistent trains. All of these factors make the Perseid shower perhaps the most beloved meteor shower for the Northern Hemisphere.

Head over to EarthSky for everything you need to know about the Perseids, our most reliable meteor shower!

Ethan took this last year from about 11pm – 1am on August 12-13 at Esch Road Beach (Otter Creek) in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. He shared that the aurora was visible on camera only, and that he was fortunate enough to catch a few meteors along with some airglow and faint northern lights before the clouds moved in and totally obscured the night sky. Follow him on Facebook & Instagram and for sure view & purchase his excellent photos of Leelanau on his website!
