This Week in Leelanau

It’s been a while since we gave anything away, so let’s take care of that. The 2011 Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival is bringing some great comedy to the region next weekend and we’ve got 2 adult and 2 kids tickets to give away to see ComedySportz Kidz this Saturday!

As with most of our email giveaways you don’t have to answer a trivia question, jump through a hoop or do anything but have your email on our list. The winner is SR from points unknown! Stay tuned and share with your friends because you could be our next winner.

Our Ski Leelanau! report shows nearly 2 feet of snow in places and our hills, trails and ski resorts are in great shape for all manner of skiing/snowshoeing/sledding/snowmobiling enjoyment! Check out our Lodging Guide for some great winter getaway ideas!

The Village of Good Harbor

G.H. Dock PiersWe have a cool feature on the now-vanished village of Good Harbor courtesy the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Good Harbor was started in the mid-1870s when a man named Vine built a small sawmill and dock. The only evidence of the village today are the dock pilings you see in Terry Clark’s photo to the right!

Sugar LoafLast week we ran a poll asking Are you still interested in the future of Sugar Loaf?. 89% said that they were still interested and the other 11% were not (or only here for the popcorn). We’ll continue our coverage of the issue!

Grocer's Daughter Chocolate
There’s still time to make that special someone’s Valentine’s Day and even if it’s not me (hint) you should definitely think about sending some of Mimi Wheeler’s amazing truffles, caramels, bon-bons and other delectable chocolates that are made with fine and fairly traded ingredients wherever possible. There’s even many of them that incorporate Leelanau herbs and fruits!!

Click for their online store and trust me – you will not find a better gift for the chocolate lover on your list!

Boyne Falls MI RARE 1950s Ice Sculpture at Boyne Mountain Snow and Ice Sculptures were a popular attraction at Ski Resorts in the 50s and 60s Bob Miles Photo Card S24328 Unsent
While the forecast Snowpocalypse didn’t do much in Michigan, Michigan in Pictures commemorated The Storm That Mostly Wasn’t with the above giant snow bunny from Boyne Mountain in the 1950s. There’s lots more great stuff there including news that the Michiagn Film Incentive might land Oz: The Great and Powerful starring Johnny Depp!

Stories on Absolute Michigan include a Michigan Radio feature on the arts and economy in Michigan and a feature on the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin that includes a great video from 1964.
