Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive re-opens

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore announces that today, Saturday, July 11th, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive will be opening on a limited basis.

A big round of applause to the maintenance crew who have been working tirelessly to clear the roadway of trees that fell over the winter and during a June windstorm.

Here’s the scoop:

  • The drive will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • The drive is usually crowded between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. To get a parking spot, consider coming earlier or later.
  • Monday thru Friday the drive will be closed to ALL forms of travel for construction of a new entrance booth.
  • Park Rangers will be at the drive entrance from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each weekend to answer your questions.
  • To provide more space for the 6-foot CDC social distancing guidance, the narrow boardwalk leading to the Lake Michigan Overlook has not been installed. Those hoping for an easier path to spectacular views can check out the Dune and North Bar Lake Overlooks.
  • High lake levels will make it difficult to rescue those in need from the dune face at the Lake Michigan Overlook. #RecreateResponsibly by enjoying the view from the top.
  • When you visit, be sure to check out your fee dollars at work. There is a new roof on the covered bridge, the bathrooms at Picnic Mountain are completely redone, and the railings have been improved at many overlooks.
