This Week in Leelanau

A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach around Lake Michigan

Next Friday (March 11, 2011) at 7 PM at Brilliant Books in Suttons Bay, Loreen Niewenhuis will release her book, A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach. The book chronicles her walk around the shoreline of Lake Michigan and her observations along the way.

We caught up with Loreen and asked her a couple of questions – click here to read more!

Sugar Loaf: Old Faces, New Numbers

The redoubtable Liko Smith returned to the web with a new effort. We don’t really care about that but it seems to have sparked some new & concrete discussion.

Ice Woman

On Michigan in Pictures we featured lots of watery goodness including this crazy March swimming photo! Why? Well, other than the fact that Michigan isn’t a hand without the Great Lakes, the fact that the Great Lakes are a $62 billion dollar job-creation engine responsible for over 1/2 a million jobs in Michigan alone was probably reason enough! Sign up for a daily photo email from Michigan in Pictures – just click that link and add your email in the box on the right!

Absolute Michigan had all kinds of stories this week including features on the Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury (July 4th weekend) and a feature on spring hikes in the Grand Traverse region.

The photo this week is Sailing takes me away… by SkySnapper. I love winter but it seems like being taken away to summer wouldn’t be all bad right about now! See more in Anthony’s Northport slideshow.

The Weather

KAScott_20110302_3204_IssStckbKen writes: ISS Flyby 3-2-11 two airships, pass in the night . . . Waiting on the frozen shoreline of Lake Michigan for the ISS to fly over … always a sweet sight! would have been aWSOMe had the northern lights also appeared : Click for his timelapse!

It’s 31 degrees under mostly cloudy skies at 4:15 PM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a March 3rd was a sweltering 64 in 1974, and all I can say is that I hope you weren’t the kid with their tongue stuck to the flagpole when we notched the record low of -30 in 1943! The forecast for today calls for temps right around 30 with flurries. Light snow and upper 20s overnight with southeast winds at 10-20+. We’ll see a mix of snow & rain early Friday with highs in the upper 30s. Snow returns Friday night and into Saturday with early highs Saturday in the low 30s before north winds ramp up and the mercury drops. Sun and 20s on Sunday. Is it just me, or is March the calendrical equivalent of a see-saw?
