Blizzard sweeps into Leelanau

December 13, 2010/in Leelanau, news, weather, winter

Don't forget the birds.Like much of the rest of Michigan, Leelanau County has been pummeled by a major winter storm. Weather watchers have reported between 9-12″ of snow for the weekend and more continues to fall. All Leelanau County schools are closed today, and some people around the county are without power this morning as well. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports:

A portion of M-72 near Maple City Road in Leelanau County was closed for at least two hours Sunday evening after a pair of two-car accidents occurred at close to 5 p.m., sheriff’s Cmdr. Ross Arena said. No one was injured.

Visibility was limited and the Leelanau County Road Commission was working to clear the highway, Arena said.

…Conditions were strong enough to cancel 12 flights, both inbound and outbound, on Sunday morning at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. The airport itself remained open.
