Lakeshore Again Tackles Management Plan
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a look at the latest efforts by National Park Service officials to update the General Management Plan (GMP) for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Opinions vary as to how well received this effort will be after a debacle in 2002. Park superintendant Dusty Shultz hopes to have a new GMP by the end of 2008 and that the new plan could call for an entirely new configuration of what lands would be designated wilderness.
“We’ve really made quite an effort to increase our public involvement in this second round,” Shultz said. “Instead of us presenting something to the public, we’ll be asking for their involvement in developing the alternatives.”
Planning workshops are scheduled for June 20 and 21 at Traverse City West High School. Call the park at 326-5134 or visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore web site (there’s a GMP information link on the left).
