I am enjoying all your photos of MNI! My maternal great-grandparents homesteaded on North Manitou Island and raised their family there. It is the Anderson homestead near the south end of the island. My grandfather was in the Coast Guard and his first assignment was on MNI. He met my grandmother while there. The house that they lived in is still standing; our family has always referred to it as the “tree house.” My grandfather was the man who drove a model T across Lake Michigan on the ice…this is when my mother was born…talk about family history! On a previous trip to NMI I looked through some photo albums at the Ranger Station and saw many photos of my ancestors. I have only been to NMI once but hope to make another trip there this summer with several cousins to explore the homestead and cemetery.
