Suttons Bay Norsemen play for State Championship Saturday!
For the second consecutive year, the Suttons Bay Norsemen varsity football team is set to play in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division I, 8-player football championship game on Saturday, January 16, 2021 in Brighton, MI. The game will conclude an outstanding, undefeated season put forth by the Norsemen despite the unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19. “They have persevered through it all with tremendous spirit, sportsmanship, and resilience” says Suttons Bay Superintendent, Casey Petz. “They have earned the right to compete in the finals, and we are extremely proud of their hard work and commitment to doing whatever it takes to keep playing football this season.”
Due to current MHSAA and MDHHS (Michigan Department of Health & Human Services) COVID-19 health guidelines, only a limited number of spectator tickets are being issued for the game. These will be allocated to the players’ immediate family/household members and Suttons Bay staff needed for transportation and event management. Extraordinary efforts are being taken by all involved to ensure everyone’s health and safety throughout the event.
For fans wanting to watch the game, FOX Sports Detroit will be offering a FREE livestream of the game on both their Facebook page and YouTube channel. Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 5:30 p.m. on January 16th (immediately following the Division II finals game and a planned 40-minute transition period for sanitizing and team/personnel changeovers). The game is also scheduled to be re-aired on January 21st at 11:00 p.m.
Suttons Bay Public Schools is planning a safe and socially-distanced “Norsemen Strong” send-off for the team on Saturday, January 16th at 10:00 a.m. in the middle/high school parking lot (please arrive a few minutes early). Members of the community are welcome to come and help cheer on the team as they leave on their championship quest! Everyone in attendance is asked to please stay safely masked at all times and remain within their individual household groups.
