This Week in Leelanau

Sugar Loaf Heats Up

Ski season is just around the corner and comments are falling like snow on our Sugar Loaf blog. Apparently, a potential buyer, David Skjaerlund, has emerged and discussion has predictably followed.

We at Leelanau.com are in the dark at the present time, but if you’d like to learn a little about Mr. Skjaerlund, here’s a video interview with him about land Dive in (if you dare).

Get all kinds of information about the Sleeping Bear Dunes including trail maps, attractions and photo galleries. The site also offers tips on where to eat, stay and shop and other trip planning ideas!

On Absolute Michigan we have an article about how invasive species may be teaming up to cause record numbers of avian botulism deaths. Filmmaker George Desort was on the north shore of Lake Michigan during a dead bird count and he captured photo & video that is deep disturbing. It is our hope that they are disturbing enough to motivate people to work hard to protect our water & wildlife from the tremendous threat posed by invasive species and other dangers. Watch it here.

Michigan in Pictures chronicled the Attack of the 50 Foot Woman in Flint, new happenings in wind energy in Michigan and this awesome photo of hang gliding’s heyday in Elberta in the 1970s.

This week’s photo is Dune Star Trails by ShaneWyatt who writes that he took it the other night at Sleeping Bear Point using a 17+ minute exposure at iso 800. He used his LED headlamp to “paint” the trees and dunes in the foreground.

The Weather

KAScott_20101121_3070_tm2abKen titled this Spruced up Fir the Holidays’ and says:
(ouch, puns intended : ) this is a favorite road and scene that I seem to drive by more often that I realized . . . these November colors are quite the contrast to how it looked 2 years ago . . . I forgot that I had taken the wintery shot and am quite amazed at how close they line up in composition, being that it was unintended!

It’s 25 degrees under cloudy skies at 8:20 AM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a December 3 was 64 in 1962 with the low of 0 set in 1976. The forecast for today calls for 1-2″ of snow and temps in the low 30s. The weekend outlook calls for more snow and low 30s on Saturday and more snow and upper 20s on Sunday. Welcome to winter.
