This Week in Leelanau

Jeez o Peets! I realized today that the email for last week didn’t send. Really sorry about that folks!!!

Our Ski Leelanau! report shows over a foot of snow in most places and our hills, trails and ski resorts are in great shape for all manner of skiing/snowshoeing/sledding/snowmobiling enjoyment! Check out our Lodging Guide for some great winter getaway ideas!

The Village of Good Harbor

G.H. Dock PiersWe have a cool feature on the now-vanished village of Good Harbor courtesy the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Good Harbor was started in the mid-1870s when a man named Vine built a small sawmill and dock. The only evidence of the village today are the dock pilings you see in Terry Clark’s photo to the right!

Sugar LoafLast week we ran a poll asking Are you still interested in the future of Sugar Loaf?. 89% said that they were still interested and the other 11% were not (or only here for the popcorn). We’ll continue our coverage of the issue!

Today there was a flurry of activity including an Enterprise editorial regarding David Skjaerfund’s quiet efforts and reports that Skjaerfund’s purchase agreement to buy at least one property had expired. What does this mean? Read all about it in our Sugar Loaf blog.

Grocer's Daughter Chocolate
There’s still time to make that special someone’s Valentine’s Day and even if it’s a day or two late, Mimi Wheeler’s amazing truffles, caramels, bon-bons and other delectable chocolates made with fine and fairly traded ingredients will make them forget about everything . There’s even many of them that incorporate Leelanau herbs and fruits!!

Call them at 231-326-3030 for fastest shipping or click for their online store … and trust me – you will not find a better gift for the chocolate lover on your list!

The Weather

KAScott_20110202_7318_fhbKen titled this Mt. Leelanau … erupts II and writes: Here is the next eruption following this one … notice the chunk of ice in the middle, the airborne one?! The chunk missed me, but I got a good soaking and new respect for the cone fields ; )

It’s 16 degrees (windchill of 4) under partly sunny skies at 3:15 PM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a February 10th was a scorching 57 degrees (2009) – a far cry from the mind, body and likely soul-numbing low of -33 set in 1899. They had a long run of double digit lows – that had to be hellish! The forecast for today calls scattered snow (no accumulation with highs in the mid teens and west winds at 10-15. There’s a chance of snow overnight and tomorrow with highs in 20s and southwest winds at 10-20+ on Friday. The weekend outlook calls for light snow, southwest winds at 15-25 and temps in the  low 30s on Saturday. For Sunday, expect some sun and temps in the mid 30s!
