Fall Color Report: Fall color is still very good! In some areas, leaves are falling but there is still great color to be found in the woods and along the Lakeshore.

Facebook is a great way to connect with people who love Leelanau and Northern Michigan, and we’ll be featuring some of our favorite Facebook pages on the Leelanau blog. Of course you are invited to share them on the Leelanau.com Facebook page as well!

While sensible people tend to shun the waters of Lake Michigan in October, many of the folks who frequent Northern Michigan Surf on Facebook are excited because the real surfing season is in full swing!

The heart of the page are updates from the admin and others about where the waves are likely to be breaking. You can also let others know where you’ll be surfing – a great thing because surfing in the fall (or really any time there are big waves) is not something that you want to do alone. You can check out some great photos that folks have taken and share your own.

Surfers will also want to check out the web cam at Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak in Empire, the Cove at Leland (pan left for the main surfing break) and the cam in Frankfort.

Michigan in Pictures, our daily Michigan photo blog, let’s you know that today is the birthday of Greenfiled Village (and a little thing called the electric light).

On Absolute Michigan has another cool time-lapse photography project today – this one is from Leelanau’s own Ken Scott and features Jacob’s Corn Maze on M-72. We also looked at Michigan’s Historical Marker program and Why it’s called Indian Summer.

Fall Fun in Leelanau this weekend!

Tomorrow night (Friday, Oct 22) be sure to head to Suttons Bay for the Fall Finale Art Walk from 5 pm – 9 pm. Visit participating village galleries & shops hosting award winning regional artists, sample wines from Leelanau County’s wineries and have a chance to win a $250 village shopping spree! There will also be a one-night special Leelanau Farmers Market during the Art Walk downtown in front of the Ice Cream Factory!

On Saturday (Oct 23) from 10 AM – 5 PM, Leland hosts the annual Fall Frenzy, a huge, end-of-season sale from participating business merchants. The day features cider, doughnuts, special sales for the end of the season in Fishtown!

Martha Graham’s American Document ~ October 23
ISLAND (Institute for Sustainable Living, Art, and Design) will present a new adaptation of Martha Graham’s American Document at the City Opera House in Traverse City this Saturday, October 23 at 8:00 pm. It will include excerpts from Michigan-born and Pulitzer-prize winning author, Bruce Catton’s Waiting for the Morning Train, a novel that describes growing up in northern Michigan. PROOF starring Gwyneth Paltrow to benefit Northern Lakes CMH
Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is sponsoring the movie PROOF on Wednesday, October 27 at the Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay. There will also be a discussion afterward on mental illness, family relationships, boundaries, and how to be a supportive friend or family member. The Weather

Ken caught this shot on the Crystal River – it’s been a great fall for all kinds of outdoor fun!

It’s 45 degrees with light rain at 9:30 AM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for October 21st was 82 degrees in 1953 with the record low of 21 set in 1959. The forecast for today calls for cloudy skies with scattered showers and highs only in the 40s. Expect sunny skies tomorrow with highs in the mid to upper 50s. The weekend outlook calls for partly sunny skies and 50s on Saturday with a chance (40%) of scattered showers and partly sunny on Sunday with a 40% chance of rain as well.
