Watch the Chicago to Mac sailboat race this weekend!
The annual Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac starts this Friday morning (July 18). The Chicago to Mac is the longest annual freshwater sailing race in the world, spanning 333 statute miles from the start at the Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island, and it runs right past us along the western shore of Lake Michigan!
You can track the boats through the race tracker. If you don’t have a friend with a boat who can give you a lift out into the Manitou Passage, good locations to watch from include Peterson Park, Whaleback Natural Area, and Empire Bluff and Sleeping Bear Point in the Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore where Ken Scott took this video back in 2012. He shares that while he was hoping to see hundreds of boats sail by, he only saw a few.
