This Week in Leelanau: October 8, 2010
Here’s the news from This Week in Leelanau – post your thoughts and comments below!
I think we’re going to give away something cool to a random person on our email list next week – pass this along to friends and family to give them a shot to win … and a whole lotta Leelanau! Fall Color Report: Fall color is very nice indeed as you can see from the photo above. While there’s still a fair amount of green in spots, aspens are in full yellow and maples are showing a lot of yellow, orange and red. We’re not sure if this weekend will be the true peak, the sun and solid color in the forecast make it a great bet for excellent fall color and color touring weather! Looks like the old cannery at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is getting a fresh coat of paint as part of a renovation this fall. The Cannery Boathouse Museum is the largest public exhibit of Great Lakes small craft and features all kinds of historic boats used around Glen Haven and the Manitou Islands. 360 Michigan has a cool 360 degree panorama of the cannery and the beach at Glen Haven that you’ll want to check out.See it bigger in Mark’s slideshowwhich features some outstanding fall photos!!

Svelata by Mia Tavonatti and Lure/Wave, Grand Rapids (Lure/Forest) by Beili Liu rounded out the top 3. | This week’s photo was taken in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore by Ian Pettman. The WeatherSometimes the beaches get all the photographic love, but m•cole•m caught this sweet September light near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s 68 degrees under sunny skies at 12:30 PM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a October 8th was 87 degrees just a few years ago in the scorching October of 2007, with the record low of 29 set in 1989. The forecast for today calls for mostly sunny skies and low to mid 70s with light southwest winds. The weekend outlook is for mostly sunny skies Saturday with highs in the upper 60s and sunny with a high near 70 on Sunday – a great weekend to take a trip to Leelanau or to get out and enjoy the Peninsula if you live here!
