This Week in Leelanau
We’re not as far along in fall color as the photo above shows, but we’re definitely starting to see yellows, oranges and even reds dotting the canopy!M22 Fall Colors - Leland, MI

Color Tour along M-22 through Leelanau County this fall

Speaking of fall color, over on Pure Michigan they list the Top 10 Reasons for a Fall M-22 Roadtrip. A few highlights include Wine Tours, standing on the 45th Parallel, Dining Destinations and my personal favorite, antique apples at Kilchermans’ Christmas Cove.

An interview with Bill Milliken

The Sun has a great interview with my personal favorite Michigan politician, former Governor Bill Milliken, who spent 14 years presiding over state government in Lansing (the longest tenure in Michigan history) and currently lives on the Old Mission Peninsula. Milliken has long served as a shining example of cooperation across political party lines. Click to read it!.

Between September 17 and October 17, when you donate to the Fall Food Drive at FatherFred.org/food your gift will be automatically matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to some very generous grants and gifts!

They’re also holding a “live” food drive October 3-9 – do what you can to take a bite out of hunger in our region!

ArtPrize - if pigs could flyOn Absolute Michigan we’re featuring the wonderfully amazing ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. I went to the inaugural event last year and was stunned by the scale of this event – it has to be one of the richest cultural experiences in the world today. If you’ve been, you know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, you should pack family, friends and random strangers into a car and head to Grand Rapids. It takes place September 22 – October 10, 2010 so there’s lots of time to make plans! The photo to the right is my early favorite to win the $250,000 ArtPrize, Steam Pig.

Michigan in Pictures featured the moons of September, painted rocks at Pictured Rocks and the belted Kingfisher.

This week’s photo was taken by Jennifer_4444, who writes that she found this barn off M-22 a couple of miles south of Northport en route to Leland in October of 2008. Check out this and other shots in her Autumn in Michigan slideshow.

The Weather

leland reflections (4)Ian took this shot in Leland that gives you an idea of where color development is right now. Check it and others out in his Leland slideshow!

It’s 70 degrees under cloudy skies at 8:30 AM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a September 24th was 89 degrees in 2007 with the low of 30 notched in 1943. Winds are going to really ramp up this morning at 25-35 out of the west (gusting to 50) with some rain but also some sun and highs in the upper 60s. The weekend outlook calls for a chance of rain Saturday morning with skies clearing and temps in the low 60s. Sunday, look for sunny skies with highs in the mid 60s.
