This Week in Leelanau

Last Day for Comments on Port Oneida

The Glen Arbor Sun reminds you that today (December 17) is the last day to provide community input on Port Oneida to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s too late for regular mail but you can submit comments on the Park’s website today! Read more from the Sun.

Sugar, Sugar, Honey, Honey*

Speaking of the Sun, Jacob Wheeler dove back into the soap opera that is Sugar Loaf Mountain, exploring Sugar Loaf’s new suitor. That was enough for us to turn the page on Sugar Loaf.

We asked folks to share their memories. Nobody did, so I posted a few of mine. Here’s hoping you have some too.

* The title was only so that I could link you over to Wilson Pickett singing Sugar, Sugar.

Black Star Farms invites you to order online through their online store. This month they have a special on their Be Dazzled Sparkling Wine – just use code BD! You can also visit any of their three tasting rooms on the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas as well as TASTES of Black Star Farms in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City for some of the most sought after and awarded Michigan wines and spirits.

Want more? Experience a truly unique agricultural destination that features two winery production facilities with adjacent tasting rooms, a distillery, Inn, and equestrian facility. The luxurious inn is the perfect place to host private special events including weddings, corporate retreats, and family celebrations.

On Absolute Michigan we checked out stories including the largest hockey crowd ever at Michigan Stadium, the new Michigan By the Bottle wine touring app and a great feature on Daisy BB guns from Seeking Michigan.

Over on Michigan in Pictures we had our usual eclectic mix of scenery, history and nature including a feature on the greatest Detroit Lion, Mr. Barry Sanders.

The Weather

KAScott_20101212_6289_fhdracbAbout the photo Ken Scott writes: I was out this past Sunday roaming the county to see what the blizzard was bringing and as I was driving through Omena, I saw this scene unfold … I call it a ‘drive by shooting’ as I had just enough time to pull off the road to get the shot … I thought about asking Sunny to come back out and do a smiley greeting pose, but the magic for me was the candidness in this.

It’s 27 degrees under cloudy skies at 3:30 PM at Leelanau Coffee Roasting in Glen Arbor. The record high for a December 17 was 56 in 1913 with the low of -10 set in 1973. The forecast for today calls for highs in the low 30s with scattered light snow (no accumulation) and maybe 1″ of snow overnight. For Saturday and Sunday, look for some snow and some sun with temps in the upper 20s and southwest winds at 10-20.
